Topper (1937)

Hal Roach/ MGM
Director: Hal Roach
Cast: Cary Grant, Constance Bennett, Roland Young, Billie Burke, Alan Mowbray, Eugene Palette,
Hedda Hopper

This timeless comedy about ghosts was based on Thornton Smith's fantasy novel. It was a turning point in Grant's film career. Grant and Constance Bennett played a carefree married couple that are killed in an auto accident, only to come back to haunt Grant's bank employer, Cosmo Topper, played by Roland Young. Grant demonstrated how expert he was at comedy combined with sophistication. And with costar Constance Bennett, the queen of sophistication, the combination of them playing George and Marion Kirby was terrific. The film became one of America's most popular movies of 1937.
