PARAMOUNT

Garbo 1951 In January 1932, he signed a five-year Paramount contract, with a starting salary of $450 a week. Before signing, the studio did not like his name, so they renamed him Cary Grant. At the age of 28 Cary Grant the movie star was born. Paramount was going to use Grant as a possible threat to Gary Cooper, their number one male star who was giving the studio problems at the time. During his five years at Paramount, Cary Grant became a bankable commodity for the studio and was properly groomed for stardom. He appeared opposite many of Paramount’s leading ladies from Marlene Dietrich to Gertrude Michael. His charms, sex appeal and good looks made a strong impression on movie going audiences of the Great Depression. However, many critics thought that he was more worthy of better film roles. Cary Grant felt the same way after five years. When his contract came to end in 1936, he did not renew with Paramount. His memorable films for this period were:
