This was the second teaming of Cary Grant with director Alfred Hitchcock and his first film with Ingrid Bergman. It is considered to be Hitchcock's finest thriller. Grant played an American agent named Devlin who recruits Alice Huberman, played by Ingrid Bergman, a daughter of a convicted traitor, to join forces with him in order to expose Nazis in postwar Brazil. Claude Rains played the Nazi agent Alex Sebastian who is stationed in Rio de Janeiro. Bergman marries Alex in order to infiltrate the Nazi ring; eventually the Nazis catch on to her ruse and Cary Grant comes to her rescue and saves Bergman from death by arsene poisoning.
