Madame Butterfly (1932)

Paramount
Director: Marion Gering
Cast: Cary Grant, Sylvia Sidney, Charles Ruggles, Iriving Pichel, Helen Jerome Eddy

Madame Butterfly was Cary Grant's last film for 1932. It was based on Puccini's famous opera. Grant played American Lieutenant Pinkerton who falls in love with a Japanese girl while stationed in Japan. His female costar was Sylvia Sidney as the young and tragic Japanese geisha, Cho Cho San. It is one of his earliest roles of significance before appearing opposite Mae West in 1933. The film did not harm Cary Grant's rising film career but neither was it a flop. American women found him more attractive than ever with his dark good looks, particularly in a naval uniform.
