Bringing Up Baby (1938)

RKO
Director: Howard Hawks
Cast: Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Charles Ruggles, May Robson, Walter Catlett, Barry Fitzgerald, Fritz Feld

This film is one of the beloved screwball comedies of the 1930s. Cary Grant plays a university professor named David Huxley whose goal is to reconstruct a complete dinosaur skeleton. This is interrupted when a young wealthy lady, Susan Vance, played by Hepburn, crosses his path. She turns his world upside down with her pet terrier and a pet leopard named Baby. Both Grant and Hepburn give a wonderful lunacy to the film as they try to retrieve a rare dinosaur bone from the terrier, with the leopard not far behind. In 1938 the film received good reviews but the audience stayed away because of Hepburn's recent box office poison label. Only through the decades has the film become a classic.
